Facts of the Expansion

Every $1 spent on construction will see $2 in additional revenue pumped into the Oklahoma economy.

Estimated cost of the expansion project is $100 million.

The terminal will remain operational throughout entire construction project.

The terminal expansion will take place over a 3-5 year period.

To maintain smooth, uninterrupted operations, the construction will be divided into three phases.

More Facts (Courtesy of Boldt Construction)

Almost 26,000 cubic yards of concrete was poured at Will Rogers World Airport from February 28, 2002 to August 18, 2006 equaling 52,514 tons or 105,028,650 pounds

The West Concourse, if measured from the point where it meets the curved part of the Terminal Building to the western edge, is 660 feet long. It is approximately 53 feet tall.

The stone that typifies the airport modernization and expansion covers 90,000 square feet, equating to almost 2,000 tons.

There are 1,203 tons or 2,406,800 pounds of reinforcing steel (rebar) that support the concrete used on the project.

Speaking of steel, almost 13,000 pieces of steel have been erected on the project, weighing 3,300 tons! This is equal to the weight of 2,063 passenger cars!

Lots of LEGOs. Did you ever play with building blocks as a child? If you did, chances are that you didn’t have 79,000 blocks with which to build your creations; but that is the number of masonry blocks utilized within the Terminal Expansion and West Concourse!

There are six different types of glass in the West Concourse. Combined, there are 1,524 panes of glass totaling 38,540 square feet, or enough glass to cover 90% of an acre.

The Phase 2 Terminal Expansion and Renovation project increases the overall size, measured in square footage, of Will Rogers World Airport by roughly 283,000 square feet. To put this in perspective, if an average residential home were 1,600 square feet, the size of the airport has increased by 189 homes!

Is it hot in here? The new Terminal Expansion and Renovation project has helped bring the building’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems up to date with 2,500 tons of cooling, a 600 horsepower boiler for heating, over 400,000 cubic feet per minute of air handling units and the installation of over 30,000 feet of hydronic piping, all in an effort to make the building and it’s automation system state-of-the-art.

More power for a bigger building. Over 4,500 new light fixtures, more than 100 electrical panels, 300,000 feet of conduit, and well over 1.5 million feet of wire are in place for the airport’s lighting, receptacles, fire alarms, security, voice & data transmission, paging system, and closed circuit television system! The 1.5 million of wire equals approximately 284 miles of wire, enough to go from Oklahoma City to the Red River on I-35 AND BACK!

Materials are great, but useless without the people that built the project safely every day. There are hundreds of people who worked safely on this project, amounting to hundreds of thousands of person-hours to build the West Concourse, renovate the existing Terminal Building, and construct the Terminal Expansion. Boldt Construction Company says thank you.
