Update #1 - 6pm, 2/12/2021

Travelers should prepare for delays and flight cancellations

Oklahoma City, February 12, 2021As forecasts predict record-setting snowfall and low temperatures for much of Oklahoma over the Valentine’s and Presidents' Day weekend, airport maintenance crews at WRWA have been preparing to take on the storm. Crews stand ready to treat runways, taxiways, roadways and walking surfaces to maintain airport operations. As a precaution though, travelers are being advised that the severity of this winter storm is expected to cause delays, flight cancellations and possibly even force flight operations at WRWA to close temporarily.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the heaviest snowfall is expected Saturday night into Sunday, consistently the busiest day for travel through WRWA. Coupled with dangerously low temperatures and wind chills, an extreme snow event would make it very difficult for airport crews to keep the airfield operational and to keep walkways and driving surfaces around the facility safe for travel.

Airlines are working with passengers in advance of the storm to reschedule their flights. If travelers have flexible schedules, they are being encouraged to rebook at this time. Travelers should call their airline or visit the airline’s website to postpone or cancel their trip.

Delays are already being experienced at WRWA due to severe winter weather. Airline de-icing procedures are taking more time in these conditions. Airline staff and contractors are working as fast as they can to keep flights moving. There have also been brief periods when airport crews have closed runways/taxiways to treat, brush or scrape surfaces.

Maintenance crews have also had to treat slick spots on Terminal Drive and on the sidewalks connecting travelers to the terminal. Drivers and pedestrians should use extra caution when traveling through the airport in these conditions.

As a reminder, the pedestrian tunnel connecting Lot #2 and parking garages to the airport terminal remains closed due to construction. Customers parking in Lot #2 should use Giddy Up Shuttles to/from the terminal. Customers parking in the garages will need to use Level 1 (Ground Level) to access the terminal through the Transportation Plaza.

As always, the airport urges travelers and visitors to regularly check the status of their flight prior to coming to the airport. Airlines offer flight updates via mobile app, text notifications and on their websites.

Travelers can also check their flight status on the arrivals and departures pages at flyokc.com.
