WRWA Winter Storm Updates - February 16-17, 2021

February 18, 2021

Update #4 - 9:00am, 2/18/2021

Airline Updates:
+
Four carriers operating at WRWA were able to get early flights out this morning before 9am, a good step toward helping them recover from the successive snow storms that have moved through central Oklahoma this week. Flights to/from DFW and Houston airports are still being affected by winter weather, but we did see departures to DFW and HOU this morning.
Travelers should still monitor their scheduled flights closely. Please subscribe to direct notifications from your airline for the quickest and most reliable updates regarding your flight.

Update #3 - 9:00am, 2/17/2021

Energy Conservation:
+
Besides encouraging our tenants and partners on WRWA property to take any steps they can to reduce their energy usage, we’ve lowered the thermostat set points for two of our critical facilities at the airport. This includes our Aircraft Rescue and FireFighting (ARFF) Station, 6921 S. Meridian, and our Car Rental Center, 5201 S. Meridian.
At the airport terminal where our diesel generator has the ability to power 100% of the building’s necessary infrastructure, generator power was used on Tuesday, February 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. These were critical hours when controlled service interruptions were scheduled for much of central Oklahoma. The terminal will again be placed on generator power for Wednesday, February 17 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Update #2 - 6:30am, 2/17/2021

Airline Updates:
+ Flights:
For Wednesday, another round of cancellations will slow air travel at WRWA.  Airlines plan to bring in aircraft to resume flights and recover some of their operations starting late morning and mid-day, Travelers are encouraged to check notifications from their airline before attempting to drive to the airport. If their travel plans are flexible, they should work with their airline to rebook.
+ Regional Weather Impact: Travel to and from Texas airports will still be minimal. DFW and Houston airports, commonly used as connections for OKC travelers, are slowly recovering from the winter storms experienced there.

Airport Updates/Conditions:
+ In such cold conditions, customers are encouraged to utilize Lot #2 for parking. Drivers for the Giddy Up Shuttles in Lot #2 have stayed on alert and are watching for customers as they enter. Many times, drivers can pick customers up at their vehicles and provide transportation to the terminal doors.
+ Crews worked throughout the night to maintain the airfield, airport roadways, sidewalks and employee parking facilities. The airfield is operational this morning. Operations employees at the airport, tasked with checking the safety and conditions on the airfield, are reporting that crews may need to occasionally close the runway and associated taxiways to broom off snow flurries that are still falling. Aside from those occasional closures, the airfield should be ready for flights to resume today.

Update #1 - 10:00pm, 2/16/2021

Airline Updates:
+ Flights:
Another round of cancellations are disrupting air travel at OKC Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning as a second winter storm moves into the OKC metro. Temperatures are holding well below freezing, allowing snow to continue to accumulate. Travelers can expect a sharp reduction in available flights over the next few days as airlines attempt to recover. If the storm moves through quickly, some airlines will attempt to get flights moving by late morning and mid-day on Wednesday. All travelers should sign up to receive notifications from their airline regarding flight status.
+ Regional Weather Impact: Winter weather has affected Texas airports very severely. Dallas and Houston airports, frequently travelled destinations for OKC travelers, are slowly trying to get operations back up to speed.
