Travelers should utilize parking shuttles and ground level for airport access

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, February 2, 2021 - Beginning Thursday, February 4, the installation of new moving walkway equipment will force the closure of the pedestrian tunnel at Will Rogers World Airport. This closure helps to facilitate replacement of the two longest moving walkways in the 950-foot-long tunnel and is anticipated to last until undetermined time.

Since it was built in 1981, this may mark the first time a full closure of WRWA’s pedestrian tunnel has been necessary. The climate-controlled tunnel is frequented by passengers, visitors and employees traveling to and from airport parking facilities. Specifically, the tunnel connects the airport terminal to Shuttle Parking Lot #2 and the 2-Story/5-Story parking garages.

Closing the tunnel will provide adequate space for the size and amount of equipment needed to complete the moving walkway installation. Outside of the installation area, a majority of the tunnel will be used to store old and new project materials, making it unsafe for pedestrians.

The moving walkways being replaced in the project are 225 feet and 195 feet long. Originally installed in 1981, both have operated well past their expected operational life and it has become increasingly difficult to procure parts for them. A lack of parts often forces these moving walkways to be inoperable. All hardware and components for both walkways will be replaced as a part of the ongoing $5.7 million Station 2 Reconstruction Project.

During the tunnel closure, customers parking in Lot #2 should utilize Giddy Up Shuttles to and from the airport terminal. All garage customers, including Hourly, Premium, Blue and Red Garage parkers, will need to use Level 1 (Ground Level). Temporary signage will be in place to help customers find their way to and from the parking facilities.
