Construction Preparation Underway at Will Rogers World Airport
OKLAHOMA CITY, March 5, 2019 – Visitors to Will Rogers World Airport will begin to see signs of the upcoming expansion as temporary construction walls go up in the terminal building.
Timberlake Construction has been mobilizing equipment and construction trailers on the east side of the building for the last several weeks and is now readying the inside of the terminal.
One of the most visible locations will be in the center of the baggage claim and ticket lobby levels. Walls will be erected around the central escalators from the tunnel level to baggage claim and from baggage claim to the ticket counter level. The walls will allow the escalators to remain operational while a new elevator is being constructed and the existing elevator demolished. The new elevator will be located at the front of the building creating more circulation space on both the baggage and ticketing levels.
Additional construction walls will be erected on the east end of the building near the Frontier ticket counter and near Gate 24. These walls will separate the existing building from the construction of the new addition.
An official groundbreaking will be held on March 29, 2019. Construction is expected to be fully underway by April 1, 2019.
The terminal expansion is an $89 million project that expands the terminal building to the east. Among the improvements will be the addition of four new airline gates, a centralized security checkpoint, improved circulation space and a mezzanine that provides access to views of the airfield to non-ticketed passengers. The project is expected to be complete in the second quarter of 2021.
