WRWA Weather Update #1

December 7, 2018

OKLAHOMA CITY, December 7, 2018 – As of 5:00 p.m. Friday, Will Rogers World Airport has not experienced cancellations or significant delays due to OKC weather. While predicted amounts of freezing rain and snow have diminished greatly, there is still a possibility that flights could experience delays tomorrow.

WRWA may also see “ripple effects” from other airports that are impacted by the winter storm such as Dallas, Houston and Atlanta.

Travelers should keep in mind that de-icing delays are common, especially when an airline has multiple flights trying to depart at the same time. The airline will work as quickly as possible to keep flights on time, but safety of the aircraft is the primary concern.Additionally, while the airport may be open and runways clear, airlines must consider numerous other conditions when deciding if flights are delayed or canceled.

Airport maintenance crews are standing by to treat and clear runways and taxiways if needed. It is not anticipated that the airport will close. Airport staff will continuously monitor weather conditions overnight and throughout the day Saturday.

As always, the airport urges travelers and greeters to check on flight status prior to coming to the airport. Most airlines now offer flight updates via notifications on mobile devices and is a good way to keep abreast of a flight’s status. If travelers wish to avoid taking a chance on delays or cancellations Alaska, American, Delta, Frontier and Southwest are waiving change fees for travel during this period.

Check flight status at flyokc.com, flightaware.com or the airlines’ websites or social media sites.
